A rhythmically complex and intensely personal work in five sharply contrasting movements, composed in 1985, and dedicated to cellist Robert LaRue. Each of the movements shares motivic material from the first measure of the first movement, stemming from the composer's fascination with the process of "cellular development" in the music of Stravinsky and Varese, the cubist technique of their contemporary, Pablo Picasso, and the "two-plus-three mixed meter mid-century Americanism" of the music of Aaron Copland.
